Buldozer zine
1. First of all I would like to thank you for taking time to answer handful of my questions. First one is probably quite boring from your point of view but I’d like to know what the origin and the meaning of band’s name are.
- We also want to thank you for your interest in our band. Thank you for your questions. We will try to answer interesting. Stickoxydal is a “gas, that makes you cheery”, nitrous oxide (N20). This gas is used in anaesthesiology for narcosis (that is why our first demo is called “Pro Narcosi”, from Latin it means “for narcosis”). In small amount this gas leads to narcotic intoxication and a person becomes cheery, everything seems funny for him. We choose this name because of our first music style - funny crust/punk/grindcore. Now we feel o.k. about this name and decided not to change it.
2. I know that first songs written by Stickoxydal were close to styles such as crust and punk. Later on you decided to switch to gore/grind. What was the reason of this decision?
- At first we didn’t think serious about making music. We wanted just to have fun and to make something really amusing and carefree, a kind of “music to beer”. Than we really liked it and decided to make something more serious and brutal-so we came to gore / grind.
3. Lyrics used in songs on your first and second demo were written in Belarussian. Why have you started to “sing” in English on your debut full-length CD “The Perverted Position of Interiors”? On the other hand, listener can’t understand anything anyway :)...
- Because we wanted you and other listeners to understand at least the names of our songs and the name of the CD itself. In spite of nobody can understand a thing, a one can read the name of the song and imagine what is it about. Besides it is possible to read texts on our web site, if somebody doesn’t understand :). I think in Belorussian it could be a little difficult, couldn’t it???
4. What does the title of your second demo, “Skozhanae stanovishcha vantrobau” mean?
- That’s another example of why we started to sing in English. This is the same as “The Perverted Position of Interiors” in English - the name of our full-length CD. But actually at first we thought about the Latin name “Situs Viscerum Inversus”.
5. On your official web-site I found information that there was a cover version of one of the songs originally performed by The Offspring on already mentioned “Skozhanae stanovishcha vantrobau”. What was the reason of this quite untypical – at least for gore / grind band – choice?
- Why not!!! It’s even more interesting, than just to play again something from another grind band, and than everybody will think who played better :). But if you deal with completely not grind band you need not just to play, but to change it so that it becomes almost grind. And the music of grind bands we try not just to replay but to add something interesting. For example we have mix-cover “Sarx”, it consist of 2 Cock and Ball Torture songs and 2 ones of Squash Bowels, and all this stuff is mixed greatly!!!
6. Max Litvinov is an ex-bassplayer of Stickoxydal. Could you explain me why his membership in the band lasted for only few months?
- He was good, but he prefers another music. Sometimes it can happen. We need only real grind-core maniacs.
7. How did your deal with Czech label Bizarre Leprous Production came into being?
- Everything is pretty easy. We sent our demo “Skozhanae stanovishcha vantrobau” to Roman, he liked it and proposed to work together, we agreed. That’s it.
8. What’s been the response to “The Perverted Position of Interiors” from fans and press like? Do you know how this CD is selling? Have you already read any reviews of it?
- It’s quite difficult for us to make any conclusions. We don’t really have a big amount of responses, but paying attention to what we have I think that freak like our product. How it is selling we don’t know. We have read a couple of reviews, but they are in Czech, so we didn’t understand about a half.
9. I must tell you that I am not very familiar with Belarussian metal scene. That’s why I would like to ask you if there are many bands, ‘zines, magazines, labels, distros, metal radio broadcasts, concerts, etc. in your country?
- Belarussian metal scene is really poor. It is in full underground, it is still a baby. We have just a couple of bands and mostly they play melodic & progressive death metal, metal core and black metal. We have very small amount of grind bands. With ‘zines, magazines, labels, distros, metal radio broadcasts everything is even worse. I can tell that we almost don’t any stuff like this. There are some guys who are trying to do something for our metal scene, but really a few. We have just one metal broadcast on a radio, one magazine, that actually hardly exists, a couple of web-zines. And there are no labels at all.
10. Have Belarussian metal bands ever experienced any kinds of censorship, difficulties or other forms of pressure from government or state machinery which is often considered to be authoritative and aggressive by people from outside of Belarus?
- We don’t have such problems. Probably that’s because our metal scene is in deep underground, there is just a small amount of bands. Frankly speaking government doesn’t pay any attention on us, probably they don’t even know that there something like this in our country. They can’t even imagine. Maybe later, when metal scene becomes wider the situation will change worse, it can be.
11. Do you think that Alexander Lukaszenko would enjoy “The Perverted Position of Interiors”?
- Oh, I’m sure he will. Definitely :)! But actually our texts are outside any politick, so there is no interest and, of course, no threat for our government.
12. Stickoxydal’s newest recording is “Chainsaw Cesarean Section”. Did you really need to record another demo instead of official release since you have deal with BLP?
- It won’t be demo, we just have written this way, we are going to correct this mistake soon. It will be a mini CD. Accept 7 new tracks it will contain video from our concert in a pretty good quality .We are going to release it D.I.Y. It will be cheap, but it looks to be interesting. So just look for all news on our site!!!
13. Who would you like to share stage with most? And what are your most important musical influences?
- We wouldn’t deny ourselves to play with lots of bands. Personally our vocalist prefers Exhumed most of all, guitarist - Gut, bass player – Cock and Ball Torture, drummer –Cerebral Turbulency. Everybody has his own preferences: old school hard core, rap, death, core, alternative rock, punk and so on, but we all are joined by our bloody thirst for grind core!
14. OK, that’s all from me. Sorry that the questions were a bit typical but that’s how it is when you’re interviewing young band with only one official release out... Hope to have a longer talk in future. All the best for Stickoxydal and thanx again for doing this interview.
- And thank you once again, it was pleasure for us to answer your questions, we hope they are not the last ones.
